Assistant Needed In London Tomorrow (23.05.08)!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Really short notice I know…and even shorter notice, I won’t have this shoot confirmed until first thing in the morning!

But if it happens, I might need an assistant tomorrow in London. The assistant should know a little bit about using and setting up studio lights.

You would need to be in Berners Street, London at 12.00pm.  It would be around 4 hours work, setting up two studio lights, adjusting the power on the lights, moving lights, packing up lights etc.

I have a budget of £100 for you.

Let me know if anyone might be interested.

Cheers.

Andy

Verboten

I’ve just had this article from the BBC pop up.

Frankly, this sort of despicable behaviour from security personnel is on the increase and will soon lead to real problems for urban photographers. It follows this campaign blogged by Lor and pretty much highlights the paranoia creeping into this society.

I know several people, including Billy, who have been questioned and/or stopped from photographing public buildings in the capital and it’s getting to the point where one feels pretty conspicuous carrying a big old Crumpler around town.

Some reading for the weekend

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Photographer and photoblogger Liz Kuball has interviewed Michael David Murphy; famous for his street photography and his photoblog ‘2point8’ a site I like to read now and then.
The interview also includes a video podcast of Joel Meyerowitz in action on the streets of San Francisco.

Street photography is sport. Not like duck hunting or archery, more like soccer, or basketball, or even boxing. At its root for me, it’s a physical exploration. I may not run all over the place bobbing and weaving, but the success of street photographs has everything to do with getting your body in the right place at the right time ……” who said street photography is not good for you? And I would also say a good justification for a Starbucks at the end of a meet-up.

Enjoy!

Tube Attack

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

How insane is this? A man photographing on the Waterloo Underground station was attacked by some lunatic who wasn’t too happy to appear in the shot:

“It would appear the victim, an amateur photographer, who enjoys taking snaps of London street scenes, was taking shots on the escalators when a member of the public took exception to having his photo taken and asked him to delete the photo.
The photographer told him he could not delete the shot as it was not a digital camera. The man then attempted to grab the camera and punched the victim in the face. The victim suffered cuts and bruising to his face as a result of the incident.”

Thankfully the photographer managed to get a decent photo of his attacker and the Transport Police is looking for the man and any witnesses who saw this happen.

Open House London

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

This weekend will see the annual Open House London event taking place. Every year in September more than 600 buildings open their doors for free to let people have a look around. Some of the most iconic buildings are included: Bank of England, Trellick Tower, Lloyd’s of London and the Gherkin.
Not all of them will allow photography but it’s worth checking it out, because it gives you a chance to travel to areas where you otherwise might not have gone that quickly.

Channel 4 are running a competition to find Britain’s best new digital photographer
http://picturethis.channel4.com/

(from the website)

“This summer Channel 4 begins the search for Britain´s best new digital photographer. Picture This offers a unique opportunity for photographers from all disciplines and backgrounds to take part in a flagship Channel 4 arts series.

Chosen exclusively from postings on this open-entry website, a selection of the UK´s most exciting new photographers will be invited to take part in a challenging competition to be filmed and then planned for broadcast on Channel 4.

Those selected will undertake a series of assignments, testing their skills in a number of different photographic genres. Their work will be assessed by world-famous members of the photographic community, amongst them photographers, buyers and curators.

But ultimately only one photographer will be chosen as the winner and will receive a fantastic prize.”
