Derelict London
I recently received a copy of Derelict London by Paul Talling and I’ve been captivated by the various fantastically neglected places he has photographed. As someone who loves all things decayed, in disrepair and yes, derelict, this book got me rather excited about some potential places to photograph. Talling has some great photos along with some interesting tidbits about each place, and he’s inspired me to try to see some of these places myself. Here are a few places that caught my eye:
- Ferrier Estate, Kidbrooke SE3
- Smithfield Market, Farringdon EC1
- Millennium Mills, Royal Docks E16
- Battersea Power Station, Battersea SW11 (I have this on my other list of places to go where we need permission)
- Chisendale Works, Bow E3
- Marshall Street Baths, Soho W1
- T-34 Tank, Bermondsey SE1 (an old Russian tank)
- Royal Garrison Church of St George, Woolwich SE18
And these are just a few of the spots (of course some of these may already be redeveloped into apartments that most people can’t afford). Talling does a great job of giving the reader a real glimpse into the “other side” of London.

I’ve always wanted to shoot some derelict buildings, but it seems almost impossible to do it legally. Trying to get permission is a nightmare due to Health & Safety nonsense, so most people seem to go in surreptitiously and I’m not one for doing things I’m not supposed to (bit of a coward!)

Yeah, I’m not into the surreptitious thing either. I wonder if we can get permission for some of these spots. I actually have a list of potential places to go to where we will need permission and I plan to post about those to see where the most interest lies - and then try get permission for that. Perhaps I’ll post about that later this week and see what folks think.

Its a great idea, but I think you’ll find that Neils right. Getting permission for these sites is nearly impossible. A friend of a friend is a UE practitioner, if you post the list Ill see if he knows anything about access/risk.
While Im not one for breaking the rules ( I turned down the opportunity to bunk over the wall at Battersea), my understanding is that youre unlikely to get anything other than escorted from the site, provided youre not doing any damage…

Battersea Power Station is really nice; I went there in 2006 when it was opened as part of an art exhibition. Not sure how much has changed since due to the building work, but from the outside it still looks pretty much the same.

I’m so up for this - right up my alley.
As for permission, I’ve always been the one to sprint across farmer’s fields to get pictures of new lambs without asking and diving over a few fences in order to get the right shot! One I took of Salisbury Cathedral was from behind a massive roped off area, all striclty no admittance etc….I guess I’m not fussed as long as I get the picture

Great tip and great idea Lorissa. And….as you know, Brentford Grand Junction Canal docks are a great spot of dereliction about to disappear over the next few years.

Didnt someone say they would be willing to lead a meetup along Brentford canal in a previous discussion? Putting one and one together, is anyone interested in a walk along there soon? Early June maybe, to give enough notice, or even the bank holiday at the end of May?
