Studio Day - Sunday 27th April
Andy (Shotage) and myself are organising a studio day on Sunday 27th April in Egham, Surrey (where I work). We will be recruiting a couple of models and a make-up artist for the day and will guide you through a few lighting set-ups before letting everyone have a go taking some shots. We will have several studio flashes and a colorama backdrop or two to play with.
Numbers have to be limited, so we are looking for 5 people who can commit to that date. As we will be getting experienced models and a MUA in, we would like to give them some money for their time, so we are asking that everyone that signs up pays £20 towards that. We will provide snacks and drink.
One requirement is that your camera will be able to fire the flashes. I have radio triggers, so as long as your camera has a working hotshoe, we should be fine.
If you are interested, please leave a comment and I will get back to you to confirm and give you further details.

Im suprised you havent had both hands snapped off. I’ll be there (as long as its OK with the missus…)
April 14th, 2008 at 6:40 am
That is a very cool idea - not my cup of tea exactly but nonetheless I’m eager to see what you guys come up with
April 14th, 2008 at 6:51 am
Sounds like a great idea. I’d like to join in.

Hi, yes I’d love to come along. But since I’m a newbie, I’m fine if someone else takes priority… Also, I would be shooting film aon an M6 and Bessa R2, but both flash hotshoes are fine. Another note is that I’ve done hundreds of hours of TV so I’m quick and flexible in studio situations. Another option is I’d even be happy to watch and shoot film from the sides if that works?

Will be good to finally meet you Eamon.
Paul, no problem, you can shoot however best suits you. Film isn’t an issue, we have light meters - I will also be shooting film, which gives me an idea. If anyone wants to try medium format, 6×6. I can bring my bronica and you are welcome to use it, just bring some 120 film.
Cheers.

Great, I’ve been dying to do some studio portraits
I have quite a bit of 120 too which i’ll bring along.

Great, so we have four people (excluding Andy and myself) so far, still space for one more (and maybe a backup person in case someone has to drop out.

I was just wondering what sort of shoot we’re getting here. Ive never done anything in a studio and want to make the most of it - anyone got any inspirational sites for me to visit (and attempt to mimic :)) for ideas?

Well 2 models, a studio set-up and a make-up artist.
The shoot will be essentially fashion orientated, although you can treat them as portraits if you like.
We will ask the girls to bring a couple of outfits, but you are welcome to bring something else, if you are a wannabe stylist. I will probably do just that, bring a few items, coats, dresses etc etc.
Inspiration? phew. Well the world is your oyster…
Erm, just a couple of links to photographers I like.

Unfortunately, I need to change my plans for that day. Too much going on, I’m afraid. Have fun!

Just need to sum up here…
So we have just three takers then. No more?
Confirmed:

Pete
Myself and Neil too, of course.

Well sounds like there’ll be more time for each of us, or does this put the day at risk of being cancelled? Im looking forward to it!
Dont even mind if it costs a little bit more..

Pete
As long as we have three people we should be fine to go ahead. I don’t want to cancel as I have booked the models & makeup artist and I wouldn’t want to let them down. If we just have just three photographers, then the session will probably be a bit shorter, if we get five then we can afford to pay them a little extra to stay on a bit longer.

I’m still on. What time’s kick off?
April 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 am
It all starts at 12 noon, I will email everyone that’s coming, details of where it is and my mobile number etc.

Just finished packing up and wanted to say a big thankyou to those that came along and made it a really enjoyable 5 hours! I have to admit that, before today, I was getting worried as a couple of photographers had to pull out, the makeup artist didn’t respond to any emails and then today, one of the models didn’t show up!!
Fortunately, the model that did show up was great! She was very professional, very patient, eager to please, good on the eye (and camera) and generally a really lovely person.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves and got something out of it, I realised afterwards that I didn’t take as many photos as I’d like to have done, but I think it was a very successful day.

Wonderful to hear! I’m looking forward to seeing photos from folks at the shoot. Add them to the Flickr group as we can all take a peek.
Thanks to Neil and Andy for organising such a great day. I’m hoping you guys may do another one in the future - one I can attend.
April 27th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I’ll second Neils comment, today was great. I’ll put a few shots up later when Ive had chance to look them over, Ive got a great one of Andy..
Watch this space
A big thanks to Neil and Andy for all their advice and for setting it up. I’ll be better prepared for the next one.
April 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Hey Neil & Andy, yes, thanks so much for today. It was a lot of fun and I learned a great deal in such a short space of time! Andy, I just looked on ebay for a Bronica haha. Also, Scarlett was really great to work with so please pass on thanks to her again if you get the chance. I’ll get my rolls developed asap and post a link to them.

Flickr noob question. I added a shot from yesterdays meetup to the Flickr group, but its not showing in the banner here - did I do something wrong?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:04 am
@Andy - is there any way of uploading the pictures from the Canon somewhere? I’d love to see everyone’s shots and also compare my digi shots to my film ones… Maybe we should create a flickr group just to upload everyone’s shots onto?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Or wait, do I mean Neil? I’m not sure which one of you was bravest enough to trust us all with your camera!
April 28th, 2008 at 8:48 am
@Paul, yes that was my camera. I will email you the photos.
April 28th, 2008 at 9:32 am
@pete: odd. not sure why that isn’t showing. you added it to this pool, correct: http://flickr.com/groups/londonphotobloggers/pool/
Perhaps try again and see? Sorry - that’s not very helpful.
You may need to join the group first. Go to: http://flickr.com/groups/londonphotobloggers/ and on the bottom right you should see “Join this Group” (or something to that effect). Click on this to join the group.

@pete
I wonder if you have some setting in your privacy prefs on Flickr that is preventing it being picked up outside of Flickr.
April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Cheers Neil and Lorissa. Ive tried pulling from the pool and reinserting - doesnt seem to have worked - and the privacy settings are ‘give it away’. Im assuming from the comments that its visible once you enter the flickr pool - just not in the banner here. Strange
April 30th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Ive solved my flickr issue (just incase anyones interested) it seems Im not ’safe’ until Ive put up 5 shots and been checked over.
