Winter Events in Oxford

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Not exactly London, I know, but Oxford is a beautiful city and there are often some really fun events here. So, for folks willing to take a trip up to the City of Spires, here are a few (ok, two) winter events to consider.

Turn it on!

When: 24 November 2007
Where: Oxford Broad Street (map)
Time: 4:00pm - 7:30pm

“Celebrate the coming of winter with this special event that will bring Oxford’s historic Broad Street to life with street performance, magic and music. Food and drink plus a carnival atmosphere create an atmospheric evening for all the family.

The switch-on of Oxford’s Christmas lights will be accompanied by an appearance from the spellbinding Heliosphere –an aerialist suspended from a giant helium balloon twisting and turning with balletic grace. “

Winter Light: White Night

When: 7 December 2007
Time: 5pm- Midnight
Where: Oxford City (various things)

Short Notice Meetup - Lord Mayor’s Show

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

So yes, rather short notice but I like to keep you on your toes…or something like that. Anyway, this Saturday, November 10th, is the Lord Mayor’s Show - a huge event in London with an over 3 mile procession, fireworks at the end and something to do with the mayor. it’s definitely an event that would be fun to photograph, but be sure you can handle large masses of people since it’s bound to be rather busy. If you are keen to see what it’s all about and meet with some fellow photobloggers, read on:

Map

Place: Just outside St. Paul’s Cathedral (X marks the spot above). The procession will pass here there and back, so you are sure to get a glimpse of it all.

Time: 10:00am. Earlier than usual, I know. The procession starts at 11am and will go past St. Paul’s at about 11:15am. It’s a good idea to get there a little earlier though and mark your spot, especially considering the crowds. There are at least some steps around here, so a higher vantage point may be ideal.

Check out the website, Lord Mayor’s Show, for more information.  Don’t forget the fireworks display (it is apparently one of the grandest) which will start at 5pm. You’ll want a good spot on either South Bank or Victoria Embankment so plan to head there a little earlier. After the procession you’ll probably have some time to grab a hot drink and then head over to grab your spot for the fireworks.

If you do decide to head down, comment here so folks know who to look out for. I won’t be joining up on this meet up as I have a food shoot to do, but I do hope folks will try to make it down and enjoy themselves.

Although a lot of fireworks happened last night, at least up here in Oxford, there are a few folks doing it right - on November 5th. If you are up for a night of photographing fireworks, and in one case a lantern parade, here are two Guy Fawkes events to check out:
