Oxford “Mini-Meet up”: Sunday, July 1st

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Well, this is a little short notice, but if folks are up for a mini-meet up this weekend in Oxford for the Cowley Road Carnival, here are the details.

The procession starts from the Plain side of Cowley at noon and heads down Cowley to Leopold Street. If you are in Oxford, or plan to come up, meet outside Nando’s (80, Cowley Road - Map) at noon. There are all sorts of stalls and acts going on from noon to 6pm along Cowley and the side streets, so we are sure to be busy.

We will plan a meet up for Saturday, July 14th as well - this time with a little more notice. More on that soon. If you are able to make it on Sunday, be sure to leave a comment here so we know who to expect. Hope to see you on Sunday!

UPDATE:  There are limited number of official photographer passes available which can give you access to back stage areas etc.  Some photos will need to be made available to the organisers to use in publicising future Carnivals. Credit will always be given for your work and there will be a link to your website. If you are interested, leave a comment here and I can send you the contact details. Or, use their general contact email to get in touch: carnival@eastoxford.com. (Thanks to Adrian Sell for getting in touch and letting us know!)

Oxford Meet up

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Well, it seems most folks are up for a meet up in Oxford - yayness! I’ve updated the poll so you can now vote for the dates. A little info on what’s happening in Oxford on those days:

Sunday, July 1st (Cowley Road Carnival)

This is a huge event each year apparently. It looks like a lot of fun from past years.

Saturday, July 7th (Alice’s Day)

One golden afternoon on 4th July 1862 Charles Dodgson, an Oxford don, took Alice Liddell and her sisters on a boating picnic up the River Thames from Folly Bridge to Godstow. To amuse them he told a story - about a white rabbit and a queen of hearts, a mock turtle and a mad hatter, and a little girl who tumbled down a rabbit hole into Wonderland. The story so delighted the 10 year-old Alice that she begged him to write it down. The result was the immortal Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which was published in 1865 under the pen name Lewis Carroll.

A fun day to celebrate Alice in Wonderland. Various events are going on - most aimed at kids of course. There is a talk at the Oxford Playhouse on the Photography of Lewis Carroll.

Saturday, July 14th (Oxford PRIDE)

Oxford PRIDE day. Apparently there are a few acts going on as well.

While I’m on the topic of meet-ups, Saturday, June 30th is London Pride. If you are up for a meet-up, please leave a comment here or contact us directly so we can organise a time and place. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it, but I’m happy to try and get the detials sorted for others.

Art “set free” around London

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

The National Gallery and Hewlett-Packard have created a really interesting project, The Grand Tour - A collection of priceless paintings set free around the streets of London.

Over the next six weeks we’re turning the West End into a giant gallery by lining the streets of Soho, Piccadilly, and Covent Garden with some of the world’s most famous paintings.

There is a great map of various walks to take with information on which paintings are on display.  I know we have done these areas to death, but this may be a nice walk and I’m sure there would be some fun shots of famous paintings in some rather odd spots.  The Grand Tour photo gallery gives you an idea of where some of these are.

New Site Launched!

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Well, as you can see, we have a new site. Please be sure to update your feed readers with our new RSS feed. As you’ll see we don’t have all our archives, so we are sort of starting afresh, but we’ll have more here soon. We have a great team of contributors (bios still to come) who will be sharing their thoughts on various topics on a regular basis.

A huge thanks to Ed of Remez.com for kindly hosting the new LPB site.

Let us know your thoughts on the new site.

Exhibitions & Events – June

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

After a good meetup today (yes, we had a proper number of people showing up), it is time again for a list with this month’s exhibitions.

Has anyone been to the Who We Are exhibition in the Tate Britain already? It’s definitely still on my list, but so far the tickets have been sold out quite quickly.

london photoblogger meetup - june 3rd, 2007

Left to Right: Ben, Tom, Neil, Paul, Billy and Rich

Yesterday we had a really great meet up in the Angle/Islington area (at least that’s where I think we were). Thanks to everyone who came along (especially Billy who led us around and made sure we didn’t get lost):

It was a lot of fun and we definitely need to have more of these, more often. Be sure to check out the LPB Flickr pool as shots from the day are added.

If you couldn’t make this one, no worries, we’ll be having another one soon. No, really. I hope to do one around here in Oxford as well for something a little different.
